“A reader lives 1000 lives before he dies, a man who never reads lives only one” – George R.R. Martin
I love reading, always have and I know I always will. Over the last 2 years I’ve been reading more and more classic novels. Some I’ve absolutely loved – highlighted circled and memorized…while others I painfully worked my way through, page by page.
Here is a list of my ABSOLUTE favourite literary quotes.
The Great Gatsby – F. Scott Fitzgerald
“I like large parties, they’re so intimate. At small parties there isn’t any privacy”
I smiled reading this. Literally grinned ear to ear. For the simple fact that this is true beyond belief.
Pride and Prejudice – Jane Austen
“A lady’s imagination is very rapid; it jumps from admiration to love, from love to matrimony in a moment”
This quote I found amusing because even in the 1800’s women’s imaginations’ are exactly the same as to what they are now – fast, quick and sometimes incredibly irrational. This is one of the most iconic love stories of all time, and it is Jane Austen’s cleaver nods to timeless, universal traits (that she probably didn’t even realize she was doing at the time) throughout the book that make it so popular across generations.
Wuthering Heights – Emily Bronte
“My love for Linton is like the foliage in the woods: time will change it, I’m well aware, as winter changes the trees. My love for Heathcliff resembles beneath: a source of little visible delight, but necessary. Nelly, I am Heathcliff! He is always, always on my mind: not as a pleasure, any more than I am always a pleasure to myself, but as my own being.”
Okay FIRST OFF, this entire book took me by surprise, who KNEW I’d love is as much as I did, despite me having to learn the language when I began reading it. Emily Bronte, is probably my favourite of the Bronte sisters, her writing I found easier to comprehend than the others. BUT THIS BOOK DAMN. It is literally the epitome of a tragic love story, and I love myself a good tragic love story. This quote was one of the many that stuck out to me, because of the image that it painted in my mind for me. It gave readers a deeper understanding for the bond between Catherine and Heathcliff, to the point of it giving my a very heavy heart as I read the passage.
“He shall never know I love him: and that, not because he’s handsome, but because he is more myself than I am. Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same”
My favourite literary quote of all time. I literally can’t even explain it, it’s just SO good. It captures their entire relationship in one line.
What are your favourite book quotes, or what are your all time favourite books? I’m dying to start a new book so any recommendations would be GREATLY appreciated.
