THE QUARANTINE UPDATE: WEEK ELEVEN (OMG) & Tips on how to social distance with friends

I wish I had done an update sooner than this, or thought of writing at least an update every two weeks but, HERE WE ARE. I am currently on week eleven of being in quarantine and, I still haven’t really started to hate it yet! The weather is getting warmer where I live, as summer approaches us, so being able to sit outside and spend more time in my backyard has been a saving grace. I have been off from work for about three weeks now, so finding ways to keep myself busy throughout the days has become a little tougher, I want so badly to continue to be productive, but sometimes it’s so easy to watch Netflix all afternoon. I’m sure many of you can relate. One thing I struggle with (quarantine or no quarantine) is giving myself grace; giving myself the time to rest and relax, giving myself time to celebrate milestones, giving myself time to just be. I graduated from a university program where everyone and their mom has a side hustle, everyone is a dreamer, everyone has ambitious goals and everyone, is doing whatever they can to make them come true. While it is my biggest motivation to be surrounded by such driven people, it can also be so discouraging. So allowing myself some grace is something that I’ve been so aware of over the last eleven weeks. Taking an afternoon off to just binge Never Have I Ever is okay. Over the last eleven weeks, one thing that I am so proud that I have kept up with is my workout plan, you can find my workout plan here! I have recently been trying to incorporate training for a 5K into my routine, I use the app called “Couch to 5K” which takes you through intervals of training for nine weeks. I am starting week two today, and I am SO excited! I grew up doing a lot of sports and abruptly stopped in my first year of university, due to being super busy! If I had known then what I know now, I would have stuck with it. Moving your body does wonders for your mental health !! If moving your body, and exercising is something you find hard to do, push yourself to take a walk for at least fifteen minutes everyday! I promise the benefits are so worth it.

Like many of you, I have been really missing seeing people other than my family, I miss spending time with my friends – you guys, I miss hugging my friends so much!! As the weather gets warmer the temptation to see people increases, the potential to meet in backyards, front lawns and parks is our new highest form of temptation. While I am someone who is taking all of this very seriously, and really am not leaving my house unless it’s for essentials, I do think that there is a safe way to see extended family and friends that you haven’t seen in a long time. Here’s what I did in the last week and some tips for anyone who wants to attempt this safely:

BACKYARD/FRONT YARD HANGS

Myself and three of my best friends hadn’t seen each-other in person in over three months. So we decided that if we put all our chairs at least six-feet apart, we could hangout in the backyard for a couple hours and order some food. We were SOO careful we even wore masks at some points incase someone got too close! When the food arrived, we put in the in the middle, and one by one we served ourselves. Yes, it was totally weird that we didn’t get to sit close to each-other, or get to just attack the food as a group the way we normally do, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. It’s better to take the precautions than to prolong this whole situation longer than it needs to be.

QUICK TIPS:

  • Wear mask upon arrival. Some might argue that this is unnecessary, but if you get to your friends house and there isn’t a clear set up for how you’re going to sit, you might need to mask if you get closer than six feet.
  • Have Sanitizer on Deck: keep it around just in case, what we did was sanitize our hands before we got food and again if anyone had to use the bathroom.
  • Bring your own water bottle: this saved us from having to get drinks for each other and making it more complicated! It also benefits the environment.
  • Keep it short and sweet: we hung out for about three hours! Unfortunately we can’t move things inside when it gets colder at night, so around 9:30pm we wrapped it up!

I hope you are all keeping well and staying safe during this time, I know it’s not always easy to see the light at the end of the tunnel but try and remember that this isn’t forever, that this too shall pass. Things might not go back to being what they once were for some time, but maybe we can come out of this stronger.

Sending so much love to anyone and everyone, wherever you are in this world.
