“you can’t help getting older, but you don’t have to get old” – Unknown
1. All that glitters isn’t gold, be content with what you have.
For many years of my life I’ve always measured my own worth, my own happiness by comparing it to other peoples. Realizing now how stupid of a statement that is, I’ve learned that everything in my life, every good and bad thing that’s happened to me is a blessing. It’s shaped me into the person that I am today and made me realize how blessed and beautiful my own life is.
2. Always express your gratitude for everything in your life, even the little things.
This one was a hard one for me to understand and wrap my head around. BUT once I got into the hang of taking even the crappiest of situations and finding the bright side in it, it changed so many things in my everyday life. I found myself letting go of emotions that were doing nothing but bringing me down, and opening my self to more feelings that brought me happiness. (If anyone is curious about how to utilize the law of attraction, and using gratitude in everyday life, let me know I’d be happy to write more about that).
3. Music makes EVERYTHING bearable, brighter, better.
this one speaks for it’s self. Music is my life, it has always been such a huge piece of who I am and has shaped me into the person that I am (if you want to follow me on Spotify, please do)
4. Sleep isn’t actually something you can keep putting off.
If you’re like me, a self proclaimed workaholic you probably don’t get nearly enough sleep as you should be getting. No, 5 hours a night is not enough, trust me I’ve been lying to myself for years now. The last 6 months of 2018 I was working everyday for about 3 months straight. It took a major toll on me, and I spent the majority of October, November and December sick. Sleep, and taking time for myself is something that is much higher on my list of priorities this year, it should be on yours too.
5. The people who care about you, will always make time for you.
“I’m busy” is just a nice way of saying “I don’t really want to make time for you”. Recognize when this happens and choose to find peace with it.
6. You have you put yourself out there
We live in a world where opportunities are all around us, so wether it comes to dating, looking for promotions at work, finding new jobs, or wanting to start your own company all those things involve taking risks. To take risks means to do things you’ve never done before.
7. You can be alone and not be lonely.
This is simply just a PSA.
8. Ask for help when you need it, and never be ashamed for it.
We all need help sometimes.
9. Travel as much as you can…without breaking the bank of course.
I never understand people who truly don’t find wonder and adventure in traveling and exploring new places. The world and it’s natural beauty can teach you far more than any text book, or class ever can. From the Cliffs of Moher to the streets of the Dominican Republic, I’m so thankful and grateful for all the places I’ve gotten the chance to see in 23 years.
10. Despite all the bad that plagues us, I swear to you there’s good.
This is something that is built into my DNA, looking for the good in people, things and situations. While it can be a flaw at times, with everything going on in the world these days it’s nice to see that while there’s so much bad there is still so much good. Never forget that.
11. Trust your gut. Trust your heart.
If a situation, person or place doesn’t feel right in your gut. Trust that.
12. You don’t have to have your shit together.
After finishing university I was so anxious about finding a job, making sure that I had my next move already planned out. I am someone who is motivated by setting and achieving specific goals, and when I wasn’t doing that I was very discouraged. It wasn’t until I began to accept that IT’S SUPER TOUGH getting a job post university, was when things began to fall into place for me.
13. Don’t sweat the small stuff.
Brush it off and keep going, life is too short to get worked up over little things.
14. Admit when you don’t know something.
I feel like we are all a part of this stigma that it’s a “bad thing” to not know what a certain word means, how to change oil in a car, or how to do something that majority of people around you know how to do. We’re human, we’re built to learn, to make mistakes and BE HUMAN. You don’t have to know everything and it’s totally okay to admit it.
15. Spend time with people who make you happy.
I mean this. Even if they make you question your worth for one second, walk away. If they’re not totally overflowing your cup, and you don’t truly enjoy seeing them and spending time with them. Walk Away. Life is too short.
16. Time heals everything, it’s honestly super freaking weird.
When I was going through a breakup a couple years back, and everyone kept saying “time, that’s honestly the only thing that will heal you” I did not believe them. Until fast forward one year and I was in a much different place, and it truly was time that I let take control. With time comes new experiences, new people and new adventures. Time heals everything, but only if you let it.
17. Educate yourself.
It wasn’t until after I graduated from university when I realized how closed off to the world around me I was. We’re all victims to this. Turning into hermit crabs and go back to live in the bubble we create for ourselves. Educating yourself doesn’t mean you have to read an encyclopedia front to back. It’s simple things like reading the news on the commute to work instead of listening to music the entire time, following news accounts on twitter and instagram. Whatever you chose to do, take 10 mins a day and educate yourself.
18. Understand that despite all our differences we are part of one human race.
The faster we all realize that we fall together, is when we realize that we rise together.
19. Believe in Magic.
You’re probably rolling your eyes. But really what do you have to lose? Magic is all around us, trust me.
20. Have Confidence.
*cue Sound of Music song* when people say that confidence is sexy, trust me, it is. Be confident in yourself.
21. Stand up for something, even if you’re standing alone.
I know it’s become harder now more than ever to stand up for what you believe in, but I think that now is the most important time to be doing just that. Whatever it is you believe in, stand up tall, and strong even if you’re alone.
22. Never stop dreaming, never stop being a child.
It’s like we all turn 13 and poof, suddenly it’s not cool to have dreams, believe in things that seam childish and we’re encouraged by so many people around us to quickly shed the childlike spirit and mature. But, why? Why should we lose the most beautiful parts of being human?
23. Love with your whole heart.
& never regret it.
Let me know what you thought of my list. What you resonate with the most and any of your thoughts. Always happy to hear what you all think.
ALSO – can I just say the older I get the harder I find making these lists, 23 is a lot of things…..hahaha
